A new waste practice legislation is now in force concerning the revised separation of co-mingled recycling collections.
The Government introduced the plan, known as T.E.E.P (Technically, Environmentally or Economically Practicable) is designed to ensure that recyclable materials such as Glass, Paper, Plastics and Metals are correctly separated at source by a business before being collected by their contracted waste/recycling contractor.
The emphasis is to reduce the use of Landfills and further promote environmental friendly waste processing methods such as MRF (Materials, Recycling Facility) and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) – For more information on these processes, please see our weblink – www.cdwaste.co.uk/how-we-recycle/
Now a legal requirement, T.E.E.P regulations call for the separation of the four most common recyclable materials (Glass, Paper, Plastics and Metals) by commercial premises, unless it is not Technically, Environmentally or Economically Practicable (T.E.E.P). This is to allow a waste processor to optimise a higher level of recyclable materials.
The Environmental Agency will be monitoring data and information from sources such as WRAP and WasteDataFlow to make sure that Waste collection companies such as ourselves, are fully compliant with the legislation requirements.
It is our duty as your registered waste management supplier, to keep you informed on the T.E.E.P law and we will be reviewing the current service that we provide you to better assess if T.E.E.P will affect your business in any way. This may include our recommendation for a bigger waste separation effort from our customers which in turn, could cut annual costs.
Technically– The introduction of an already proven waste stream separation system, i.e. extra containers, that has been planned out at a bespoke level for specific customer requirements.
Environmentally – After assessing the possible changes that could be introduced to a customer’s current recycling operation, it will further be assessed whether the proposed changes would be environmentally practical such as the effect it would have on chartering extra waste collection vehicles and their emissions.
Economically– If the proposed increased separation of waste streams would require an excess of extra containers or collections which would result in a customer paying an excessive increase in cost, then T.E.E.P would not be viable.
Necessary – Many types of waste are disposed of at source in the same containers which can cause cross contamination. The whole idea of T.E.E.P is to separate materials at source where possible, thus increasing the quality of the recyclable materials
